THE HIEROGLYPH OF THE HUMAN SOUL: ARCHETYPAL FOUNDATIONS IN ART

This immersive seminar represents a guided tour of archetypal representations of personality through art.  Artist Leigh McCloskey and psychologist Matthew Bennett will describe a mythic and psychological journey towards emotional completeness.  Referencing ancient mythological narratives as well as contemporary theories of personality development, presenters provide a map of human emotional experience called the Hieroglyph of the Human Soul.  The seminar will include visual and lecture presentations, conversation and discussion with participants, and meaningful interaction with Leigh’s evocative paintings.

 ADDITIONAL COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This Continuing Education seminar explored the archetypal foundations of human personality through amplification of artistic expression in a unique three dimensional visual medium. Psychologist and lecturer Matthew D. Bennett PsyD reviewed psychoanalytic and Jungian principles of personality organization, including an integrative discussion of both the archetypal content characterizing certain clinical personality organizations and the defensive structures which modify them. This immersive and participatory learning experience took place on the premises of the studio of artist, visual philosopher, and actor Leigh J. McCloskey at his home in Malibu, California. The seminar included an immersive guided tour of Leigh’s captivating masterwork, the Hieroglyph of the Human Soul, amplified through the analysis by Dr. Bennett and commentary by the artist himself. Participants entered into the canvas of the three-dimensional, living painting which covers the walls, ceiling, floor, and furniture of the studio, and explored the archetypal images representing four major personality organizations. Participants Immersed themselves in the three dimensional images using 3D glasses. The seminar emphasized how artwork can be used to illuminate understanding of personalities and psychological theories of self.
